The Harley-Helfrich VFW Post 2920 was mustered on February 20, 1944.
The Post was named to honor the memory of John A. Harley and James H.
Helfrich. These young men were the first fallen soldiers from Crestline during
World War II. John Harley served in the Navy as a pharmacist's mate. He was
killed in a naval battle of Guadalcanal in 1942. James Helfrich was in the Army.
He survived the surrender of Bataan and the infamous death march that followed
He died in a Manchurian prisoner of war camp in 1942
